Turn off the TV and read some good books!

I would classify myself a TV addict. Since I was a small kid I came home from school and watched television. I spent hours repeating reruns of Gilligan's Island, Brady Bunch, Munsters, Andy Griffith, Flintstones, F Troop and a host of other sitcoms and kids fair. As I grew older I graduated to Mash and Taxi and other shows. Even today I come home from work and chill out to Bob Newhart reruns and even enjoy a few of the prime time network and cable shows. I do read more and more these days however. I encourage you today to turn off the TV and open up a good book. Read something aimed at learning more about Christ and His work. There are many good books. Some of my favorite authors these days are C J Mahanney, Sinclair Ferguson, John MacArthur, Jerry Bridges and James Montgomery Boice. I also read classic works by Puritans and other early Christians. Over the years I have developed a list of favorite authors and classics that have been favorites of others. The benefit of this time devoted to learning more about Christ and the Bible far exceeds the effort and beats watching the usual fare on TV. I read commentaries on books of the Bible, surveys of the Old Testament, theology, discipleship, evangelism, witnessing. The goal of my reading is to grow in faith and understanding and the ability to relate more about the Gospel to others.

I am finishing up a book by Sinclair Ferguson called "Deserted by God?" which uses the Psalms as a basis for lessons on dealing with spiritual depression. I am not sure what will be next but I have at least a half dozen choices sitting on the shelf waiting for an opportunity to pick up too.

Turn off the TV with your remote and relax with a good book. Learn more about the Gospel, build your faith and understanding of the Bible and become more confident in your witness to others. Need a good book recommendation I can point you towards a few titles that may spark an interest.
